PowerPutt Hole Showcase: Dusty Trail 9

The Tombstones are Key to Nailing an Ace on this Short and Sweet Par 3

Dusty # 9

PowerPutt Hole Showcases are here, ready to turn your –10's into –15's and your –20's into record low scores! The next hole to be conquered is Dusty Trail #9, a par 3 that's a breeze to birdie but can be tough to get it in the cup in one.

First and foremost, a birdie is always a good thing, and Dusty 9 is one of the easiest birdies to hit in the entire game. Still, the true PowerPutters out there recognize how important a single stroke can be, and an ace before the turn can be crucial in defeating your opponents or hitting an all-time best score.

The biggest key here is the hole layout and how you play your tee shot. This particular hole is three-tiered, with players starting faced towards the middle (raised) portion of the hole. From there, the hole takes a sharp turn right and dips down to the same level on which you are placed before you hit your first shot.

There are two ways to play this initial shot, one of which is going to force you to think outside the (tee) box. Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

The easier and less dramatic way would be to simply hit your ball on an angle hoping for a good bank as the ball travels to the other side of the hole. This will lead to a flat putt for birdie in most instances, but will likely come up short of and/or be offline of the hole. Be careful! The hill can play a big factor and send your ball sailing out of bounds if you hit your tee shot too hard. This leads us to our next shot, which will require some practice and a bit of trust.

The tombstones placed in front of you don't just add to the beauty of the hole in this instance – they can be used as barriers! Hit your ball hard enough and you will sail into them and be sent back onto the playing area and at the hole!

Dusty #9You can hit off a number of them, but the one that will lead to the most success is the tombstone on the right with the vulture on top. Hit your tee shot here and your ball will ricochet back towards the bottom tier and bank towards the hole. While it's crucial to hit your tee shot hard enough to hit the grave, make sure not to hit it too hard as it could be sent flying OB in the other direction. If you are placed in the far left tee area you can also try hitting off the tombstone on the far right. The ball will lose speed on contact and take a much different route towards the hole, but can still be very effective.

This will take practice and a bit of trial and error, but once you see it work for yourself you'll immediately be sold. While you won't hit a hole-in-one every single time, you will give yourself a chance every round and end up with no worse than a birdie. Plus you'll impress your friends with your tombstone-rattling tactics!
